| Mobile learning |
Learning that takes place on the move using material made available via an electronic device. These include smart phones, PDAs, e-books and MP3 players. The materials can be courseware or any other useful information such as the result of web searching and social networking. |
| On-the-job training |
On-the-job training takes place when a person learns in their workplace, but although the term should be used to describe planned, structured instruction, it is often used to describe any sort of learning that occurs while a person is working. |
| Peer learning |
Method of learning in which a facilitator ensures a group of learners is faced with a problem which they tackle collaboratively, often through methods such as research, discussion and presentation. The group could consist of just two people (and could become a coaching session) or it could be 30 or more, often split into sub-groups (particularly in academic situations). It contrasts with collaborative learning in its formally facilitated nature. |
| Performance consulting |
The process of engaging with management and employees within an organisation to understand what gaps there may be in employee performance, and how they can be bridged. Closing performance gaps may be a matter of improving knowledge and/or skills (through training), or it may be a matter of improving the working environment or employee motivation (not solvable with training). |
| podcast |
Any syndicated distribution of media, including video and written materials, but usually audio files. In learning, podcasts are a useful way of distributing training materials and have been enthusiastically adopted by many universities seeking to capture and re-use lectures. The term was created in 2004 by Ben Hammersley, writing for the British Guardian Newspaper. |
| SCORM |
The Sharable Content Object Reference Model (SCORM) is a collection of standards and specifications for e-learning. It defines how learning content communicates with the learning platform. SCORM is a specification of the Advanced Distributed Learning (ADL) Initiative, which comes out of the Office of the United States Secretary of Defense. |
| Self managed learning |
An approach to development where the learner takes responsibility for the direction of their learning, and often its design and implementation. This forces trainers to move from a position of expert guides to resources, called upon by the learner. |
| Sharable Content Object |
A learning object. Usually used to refer to a learning object (or collection or objects) that communicates with a learning management system using the Sharable Content Object Reference Model (SCORM®) Run-time Environment (RTE). |
| Skills management |
The practice of understanding, developing and deploying people and their skills. Well-implemented skills management should identify the skills that job roles require, the skills of individual employees, and any gap between the two. |
| Social Learning Environment |
A Social Learning Environment (SLE) is an online environment where people learn through discussion and content creation and so improve personal and professional productivity. It can also be used as part of formal e-learning, as an environment where learners and trainers can mix. It can also be used as a sort of EPSS in the workplace. In an SLE content access and user activity are not usually tracked, in contrast to a Learning Management System. |
