| SCORM |
The Sharable Content Object Reference Model (SCORM) is a collection of standards and specifications for e-learning. It defines how learning content communicates with the learning platform. SCORM is a specification of the Advanced Distributed Learning (ADL) Initiative, which comes out of the Office of the United States Secretary of Defense. |
| Self managed learning |
An approach to development where the learner takes responsibility for the direction of their learning, and often its design and implementation. This forces trainers to move from a position of expert guides to resources, called upon by the learner. |
| Sharable Content Object |
A learning object. Usually used to refer to a learning object (or collection or objects) that communicates with a learning management system using the Sharable Content Object Reference Model (SCORM®) Run-time Environment (RTE). |
| Skills management |
The practice of understanding, developing and deploying people and their skills. Well-implemented skills management should identify the skills that job roles require, the skills of individual employees, and any gap between the two. |
| Social Learning Environment |
A Social Learning Environment (SLE) is an online environment where people learn through discussion and content creation and so improve personal and professional productivity. It can also be used as part of formal e-learning, as an environment where learners and trainers can mix. It can also be used as a sort of EPSS in the workplace. In an SLE content access and user activity are not usually tracked, in contrast to a Learning Management System. |
| Software as a Service |
A model of software deployment where the software is hosted externally to the client, who licenses it for use on demand (typically for a monthly license fee). In learning, SaaS is a common model for the provision of learning software as it enables clients to gain the benefits of an enterprise-wide solution without needing to install and maintain the software and its associated servers. |
| Subject-matter expert |
A Subject Matter Expert (SME) is an individual with useful experience and/or knowledge in a particular field. In learning, SMEs are frequently called upon to assist in the production of learning materials, however working with SMEs effectively to ensure accurate and comprehensive knowledge transfer requires experience and specialist skills. |
| Synchronous/Asynchronous training |
Training that is synchronous takes place at the same time as the delivery of training. This can be in face-to-face instruction, using virtual classroom technology, over the telephone etc. In asynchronous training, learners' learning takes place in their own time, while interaction with the trainer keeps them on course. Such asynchronous interaction is typically by e-mail, but could be via any medium where there is no immediate dialog. |
